HB: Why was Roller Jam something you wanted to do?

DR: It was an adrenaline rush - it allowed me to
showcase an all around look at skating, not just speed,
but agility, team strategies, etc..

HB: Did you have an interest in roller derby prier to
becoming a Roller Jam skater?

DR: Nope, didn't know a thing about it.

HB: Did you find it difficult to learn to skate on the bank
track?

DR: I had raced on bank tracks in speed skating, so it
wasn't too difficult at all.

A founding member of the Texas Rollergirls, Melissa Joulwan (photo left courtesy: Celeste Danger) gets (and gives) bruises as Melicious, number 11 on the Hotrod Honeys. In 2005, she was voted Fan Favorite and in 2003, she won the Miss Texas Rollergirl title at the annual Whammy Awards.

Her most recent journalistic gig was as the sole writer for You Decide, a syndicated monthly feature that appears on KQED.org, Salon.com, and other public broadcasting station sites. Her work won the Grand Prize at the 2004 Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism, as well as the 2004 Golden Dot Award for Best Non-Commercial Online Journalism from George Washington University.

Melissa has published articles on fitness and nutrition, music, culture, and the rise of Roller Derby for mainstream magazines, alternative publications, and web-zines, including Paste, Carbon 14, the Austin-American Statesman, Chemical X, ACE Fitness Matters, and others.

As spokesperson for the Texas Rollergirls, Melissa (photo left courtesy: Rebecca Davis) appeared on Good Morning America in August 2004, where she schooled Diane Sawyer on becoming a Rollergirl. She's also been interviewed for other broadcast media, including the Today show, The Early Show, and National Public Radio. Her interviews with print media include The Associated Press, The New York Times, SPIN, Inside SPORT, and Drill.

In 1996, Melissa launched Go, girl!, an online zine dedicated to getting women involved in sports; it had a monthly readership of 17,000. From 1998 until relocating to Austin in 2001, she worked as a copywriter and Creative Director for Organic, Inc., in San Francisco, leading creative teams to extend well-known brands online. Her clients included Sony Playstation, Macys, Nike, Blockbuster, Hard Rock Cafe, and Home Depot. She also lead brand development projects for Internet start-ups, and taught all-day seminars in San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles on Writing for the Web and User-centric Web Design.

The new all female Brew City Bruisers skated their first season league flat track roller derby Championship Bouts at the Milwaukee County Sports Complex in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Friday, December 15.

All four of the league's teams were in flat track roller derby action. In the end, the Rushin' Rollettes (photo top left) skated away with the league title.

Santa Claus loves roller derby

Those elves have been busy getting Santa Claus ready to suit up for roller derby, complete with his own action figure. With the revival in roller derby, both Santa Claus and the elves believe that roller derby action figures will be a hot toy request in the coming years. They want to be ready!

In an exclusive interview, Santa stated that he was more of a pack skater than a jammer. He did think that with his extra size, he might also be a great blocker. He added, with his trademark Ho Ho Ho, that he needed a bit of practice on both the banked track and the flat track, just to get into a bit better skating shape.

Santa did say that he had a great new season of roller derby in his sleigh for everyone in 2007.

Roller derby fabric: Rollergirl prints

As roller derby bursts onto the mainstream, the sport is certain to leave tracks wherever it skates. Big Easy Rollergirl at The Big Easy Rollergirls blog received the fabric (photo left) in the form of pillow cases from her mother.

As New Orleans, Louisiana skater Big Easy Rollergirl points out, roller derby is indeed a legitimate sport. Joining other sports and activities as a fabric print design is one more sign that the sport has arrived. With every jam skated and bout completed, roller derby finds its rightful place in the lineup of sports everywhere.

Big Easy Rollergirl writes:

Big Easy Rollergirls bout: Tannenbaumbers win

The all female Big Easy Rollergirls return to flat track roller derby action at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans, Louisiana on Saturday, December 16.

This flat track roller derby holiday season themed bout saw the Tannenbombers ruin the holiday season for Santa's Little Sleighers by a final count of 62 - 56.

In the spirit of the holidays, the Big Easy Rollergirls celebrated their last intra league bout of 2006 in full holiday regalia. Santa's Little Sleighers and The Tannenbombers vied for the Glory in Excelsis DERBY!

Fans took note as the teams welcomed new derby girls to the ranks. This was the very first bout for Beatrix sKiddo and Ibeatya Amber (Sleighers) and Lt. Dan (Tannenbombers). Congratulations, ladies, on a wonderful bout!

It was an incredibly well-matched lineup. The teams went back and forth with the winning score with each jam. At halftime, the Sleighers were ahead by three little "Christmas Wish" points.

ARSD announces The FireBirds

The traditional mixed gender banked track roller derby American Roller Skating Derby announced its newest team and staff on December 1. The latest league addition, announced by ARSD owner Dan Ferrari, is known as the LA-San Diego FireBirds. The team is based in Southern California and is currently recruiting and training skaters.

About the new team, Dan Ferrari made the following announcement:

I wanted to thank every one for making this FireBird Media Week such a huge Success. We had 3 TV stations out for try-outs along with 2 Newspapers. We had a great article in the San Diego Reader, and on Friday the Firebirds were on the morning show on KUSI San Diego for 2 hours, then on Saturday the FireBirds were featured in the televised Christmas Parade in Escondido. This is only the tip of the iceberg for the FireBirds and our San Diego area.

We have almost 30 new and upcoming skating stars that will start training this Monday night December 11Th from our Try-Outs. Training will be handled by Head trainer Ms. Georgia Hase, along with EG Miller, Dave Marez, Dave Martinez, Mike Flaningam, Jim Fitzpatrick, Pam Schwab, and Cory Atkinson. All pro skaters are welcome to come and train. Training Monday and Wednesday nights at the Ups-N-Downs Roller Rink in Escondido.

The awesome brand new Banked Track being built as we speak by Mike Flaningan will be up on Jan 29Th also at the Ups-N-Downs Roller Rink in Escondido, and training will be every night, other than game nights till Feb 12th.

Carolina Rollergirls defeat Arizona Roller Derby

The all female Carolina Rollergirls hosted the all female Arizona Roller Derby in an interleague flat track roller derby bout at Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina on Saturday, December 10.

The interleague flat track derby bout saw the Carolina Rollergirls travel team skated past the Arizona Roller Derby travel team, known as the Tent City Terrors, by a final score of 100 - 90.

With the victory, the Carolina Rollergirls remain undefeated at home in interleague bouts.

In the end, the Tucson Roller Derby Saddletramps defeated the Duke City Derby Munecas Muertas by a lopsided score of 139 - 28.

This flat track roller derby bout features skaters from Duke City Derby joining with the skaters from the new all female Santa Fe Roller Derby. The teams formed are called Heavy Metal and Hip Hop.

Along with the exciting roller derby action, a rockin' band will keep the entertainment coming your way.

LA Derby Dolls: Babydoll results

The all female L.A. Derby Dolls presented the Babydoolls, as the newest banked track roller derby skaters, in exhibition bout action at The Dollhouse at the Tokyo Bowl in Los Angeles, California on Saturday, December 2.

Skating this banked track roller derby new skater exhibition matchup were the Glam Reapers facing the Juggernauts. All of the rookie skaters were in their first games as members of the L.A. Derby Dolls.

In the end, the Glam Reapers skated past the Juggernauts by a final score of 48 - 35.

With jammers Mila Minute and Leia Mout leading the charge, the Glam Reapers rolled over the Juggernauts in a decisive 48 to 35 victory in December 2ndâ€™s â€œBaby Doll Brawlâ€?.

In what passes for a debutant ball in the world of â€œdo it herselfâ€? grassroots roller derby, the two â€œfresh meatâ€? teams consisting of mostly green skaters who have never played a public game, left the spectators with no doubt that they were at a full blown hard hitting LA Derby Dolls banked track match.

The Glam Reapers shot out of the gate from the start, and by the seventh jam led the Juggernauts 15 to 3. Their defense hit hard and gave no quarter to the Juggernaut offense. It looked like jammers Gori Spelling and Squirrely Muldowney were turning around the game for the Juggernauts, and the â€˜nautâ€™s defense tightened up when P.I.T.A started delivering rail bending blocks to the Reapers.

By the 19th Jam, the Reapers lead closed to a scant 6 points, leading 22 to 18, and it looked like the â€˜nauts were going to catch up, but the Reaper defense kicked into high gear with veteran Razor Slut grinding the Juggernaut jammers into hamburger. The Reapers racked up a fair number of minor penalties holding back the Juggernauts, costing them a defensive player each time for the next jam.

But Reaper jammers Leia Mout, Mila Minute and Kung POW Tina slipped through the Juggernaut defense even when theirs was weakened due to penalties, to widen the lead back to 13 points at the end of the final period.

This interleague flat track roller derby bout featured the Colorado Springs, Colorado based Pikes Peak Derby Dames travel team known as the Slamazons meeting the Albuquerque, New Mexico based Duke City Derby represented by the Munecas Muertas.

In the end, the hometown Duke City Derby Munecas Muertas skated past the visiting Pikes Peak Derby Dames Slamazons by a final score of 118 - 54.

Slamaz-owned": Muñecas Beat Pikes Peak in Home Debut

On Saturday, November 11th Duke City Derby hosted their first bout against a visiting league as the Pikes Peak Derby Dames' Slamazons rolled into town to take on our own Muñecas Muertas. The Slamazons faced a daunting task of trying to skate competitively against an emerging team while adapting to DCD's decidedly unconventional venue. In the end the combination of home track advantage and the strong play of the Muñecas proved more than Pikes Peak could overcome.

The first period was the most difficult for the Slamazons as they struggled mightily to figure out how to score points on Duke City's narrow Club Fantasia track. The Muñecas, however, capitalized on the Slamazon blocking and jumped out to a quick 37-2 lead, which they extended to 54-8 by the period's end.

The Virginia based Dominion Derby Girls were represented by their all star travel team. The hometown Charm City Roller Girls countered with their travel team known as the Mobtown Maulers.

When the bout ended, the Charm City Roller Girls had skated away from the Dominion Derby Girls by a final total of 244 - 61.

The Charm City Roller Girls hosted their first home interleague bout as the Dominion Derby Girls from Southern Virginia came up to Baltimore to do battle with the CCRG's all-star team, the Mobtown Maulers. In the end, the Mobtown Maulers bested the Dominion girls with a final score of 244-61. Dominion's jammer Sweet N' Lowdown won the respect and cheers of the Baltimore crowd with amazing speed and a slicing attack that was the obvious heart of the Dominion offense; she scored over half the visiting team's total points: 38 points on 12 jams. Joy Collision of the Maulers led the scoring, with 78 points on 9 jams.

Windy City Rollers Ivy King Cup Champs: The Fury

The all female Windy City Rollers skated their 2006 League Championship Bouts, in the quest for the Ivy King Cup, at Cicero Stadium in Cicero, Illinois on Sunday, November 12.

All four league teams skated in this flat track roller derby league title event. In the end, The Fury skated away with the 2006 Ivy King Cup as League Champions.

In League Championship game, the defending 2005 Ivy King Cup Champions The Fury repeated as 2006 Champs by defeating the challenge of the Hell's Belles by a final score of 25 - 25 to claim the 2006 Ivy King Cup. The trophy was presented to the winning team by Ivy King's sister Phyllis Romano.

Ivy King Cup: Hellish Brawl leads to Furious victory 25-15

The main event of the evening between the 2005 Ivy King Cup champs The Fury and the 2005 regular season champs Hell’s Belles proved to be personal. During warm-ups, Dayglo Daygo took a tumble that resulted in a broken tibia and fibula, leaving the Belles short one of their seasoned veterans. Jammer Anne Putation put the first points on the board, followed by a succession of 6 different Fury jammers in a row that kept the Belles guessing. Belle captain Athena DeCrime helped to close the point gap by keeping hot on the wheels of Hurricane Charlie. At the end of the first half, the Fury led 16-12.

The ferocious tone intensified in the second half where penalties continued to rack up. Athena scored early in the half while jamming opponent Kola Loka watched from the penalty box. Once back in the action, Kola scored some Furious points with the blocking help of Sinn Pein. Quiet Storm showed her impressive skills by leaping over a fallen skater to keep up with the pack, while Goldie Shocks was swept off the track by Hurricane Charlie’s wake of destruction.

It was in the final three and a half minutes of the bout when tensions escalated into chaos. After a brutal play that resulted in Varla Vendetta hitting the wall hard, both benches rushed the track, and an enraged Kola Loka literally kicked her way into a group of Belles. Once the refs (and the presence of the Cicero police) broke up the brawl, the bout was delayed as thrown water bottles were cleaned up and penalties were counted. Kola Loka, Varla Vendetta, and Juanna Rumbel were ejected from the track. The quest for the Cup resumed but tempers were still hot; Anita Bier slammed down Eva Dead like a can of Schlitz before she had even recovered from a previous fall.

In the final jam the penalty box was packed with two members from each team. The Fury on the bench cheered as the clock wound down and Anne Putation breezed around the track, their 10 point lead unthreatened despite Storm’s strong last-ditch efforts. With a final score of 28-15, the Fury won the Ivy King Cup the second year in a row, and gratefully accepted the trophy presented by King’s sister Phyllis Romano amidst cheers and the spray of champagne.

Double Crossers dominate Manic Attackers 40-20

Having met twice and split victories in the 2006 regular season, the matchup between the Double Crossers and the Manic Attackers proved to be an interesting one. The season champs Attackers struck early and scored the first points, but the Double Crossers soon answered back with bloodthirsty jamming by Donna Party and Hoosier Mama. In the second half, The Double Crossers were practically unstoppable, outscoring the Manic 18 to 1 after the first five jams.

Donna Party’s grand slam and Ying O’Fire’s ejection due to major penalties were two serious blows to the Attackers’ game. Before the end of the bout, Merry Death and Ava Sectomy were also banished from the track as the penalties continued to rack up, especially during one particularly brutal play that sent Hoosier Mama into the bench. As the clock ran down, the Manic Attackers couldn’t catch the red hot Double Crossers who had double the points, with the final score of 40-20. The Double Crossers found redemption in their 2006 closer, while the Manic Attackers suffered another post-season heartbreaker.

This interleague flat track roller derby all Florida doubleheader features two bouts involving the hometown Tampa Bay Derby Darlins.

The all female Gotham Girls Roller Derby continued their 2006 flat track roller derby playoffs at Hunter College Athletic Center, located in Manhattan, New York, New York, on Friday, November 3.

In this exciting flat track roller derby league semi-final bout, the Manhattan Mayhem edged out the Brooklyn Bombshells for a one point victory of 70 - 69. The Manhattan Mayhem, as the winner of the semi-final bout, advances to the league championship against the defending champion Queens of Pain on November 18.

Tensions were high this past Friday at the Hunter College Sportsplex, as the Manhattan Mayhem prepared to take on the Brooklyn Bombshells in the second round of the semi-finals. Both teams entered the rink shorthanded, with both Li’l Red Terror (BB) and Sweet Sherry Pie (MM) on the injured list and Rippin Kittin (MM) and Sassy Hipsaw (BB) out of town. After an intense and hard fought match, it was Manhattan who skated away victorious, with 70 points to Brooklyn’s 69.

The all female Penn Jersey She Devils hosted the all female Long Island Roller Rebels in a special interleague flat track roller derby bout at Cornwell's Skating Center in Bensalem, PA on Sunday, October 29.

The Long Island, New Yok based Long Island Roller Rebels were represented by the Long Island Scallyhags. The Philadephia, PA based, and Judy Sowinski trained Penn Jersey She Devils countered with the She Devil Zombetties.

In the end, the home town She Devil Zombetties skated past the invading Long Island Scallyhags.

In the last bout of both teams 2006 seasons, the She Devil Zombetties took on the Long Island Scallyhags in a bout that had the crowd on their feet. Keeping the game close the entire time, both teams skated their butts off, pushing their jammers beyond the point of endurance to rack up just a few more points. With a few fights on the track (unscripted, of course), the girls from both teams had to batten down and re-assess their game plans in time for a heart-racing third period that saw many penalties from both teams. Luckily, no girls were seriously hurt in this bout, although there were many bumps and bruises to be had. In the end, the Zombetties were victorious, but the Scallyhangs put up a long and hard fight. Both teams showcased a variety of blocks, near misses and skating skills, giving the fans something to cheer about and replay over and over again in the days to come.

The much anticipated matchup between Madison's Dairyland Dolls and the Minnesota RollerGirls was a battle for the ages. The evening was filled with skilled jammers strutting their stuff and the heavy hitters dropping bombs along the way. The fans turned out in big numbers and supported the RollerGirls with some serious noise.

The RollerGirl's all-star jammer, Jawbreaker, made her presence known early in the bout with a huge check on the Dairyland Dolls' super jammer, Mouse. Mouse may be small, but she proved to be very nimble. She slipped through cracks in the Minnesota RollerGirl defenses all night long and pestered the opposition with her quick moves and sneaky ability to skirt blocks. Mouse was a big factor in the Dairyland Dolls' victory.

In their previous August 25 bout in Madison, Wisconsin, the Mad Rollin' Dolls, also represented by the Dairyland Dolls, skated past the visiting Minnesota RollerGirls all star team, by a final score of 132 - 46.

This interleague flat track roller derby matchup saw the St. Louis, Missouri based Arch Rival Rollergirls send the Arch Rival Rollergirls All Stars to challenge the Chicago, Illinois based ChiTown Sirens who counter with Chicago's Finest Roller Girls.

The bout marked the first interleague roller derby game skated in Chicago in 25 years.

When the dust settled on the flat track, the Arch Rival Rollergirls All Stars skated past the Chicago's Finest Roller Girls by a final score of 81 - 67.

WSL RollerJam is back on television in the UK. The still remembered roller derby league games are televised every weekday on Britain's Challenge TV. The program airs at 7:00 pm UK time.

The Wicked Wheelers of the West faced the Mid Island Rolling Thundercats in the closest scoring bout the LI Roller Rebels have seen all season. Fans went wild as lead jammers for the Thundercats, Sissy Facekick and C-Roll, fought through each jam for every point. The Thundercats efforts were endless, but the brilliant blocking by the Wheelers defense held them in the pack while the Wheelers jammers, Mary Jane Rotten, Aunti Christ and Iris Carbomb, racked up the points on the scoreboard winning the bout 58 - 44.

The flat track Minnesota RollerGirls feature their travel team and the Madison, Wisconsin based Mad Rollin' Dolls will counter with the Dairyland Dolls.

Rat City Rollergirls Championship Bouts Saturday

The all female Rat City Rollergirls skate their second season 2006 Championship Bouts at Hangar 30 at Magnuson Park at Standpoint in Seattle, Washington on Saturday, October 21.

All four of the Rat City Rollergirls teams are in action for these championship flat track roller derby bouts.

In the League Championship Bout, the second place Sockit Wenches challenge the undefeated first place Derby Liberation Front.

ARSD: Pioneers defeat Bay Bombers

The traditional mixed gender American Roller Skating Derby ARSD returns to the baned track at American Roller Skating Derby (ARSD) the Alameda High School in Alameda, California on Saturday, October 14.

This banked track roller derby matchup saw Chicago Pioneers slip past the ARSD Champion Bay Bombers by a final score of 45 - 42.

My good friend, and long time roller derby supporter, Robert Siese was in attendance at the game. H filed the following game report:

Pioneers win, Dave Martinez Injured

First Half

The game looked like it would be a defensive battle. Scoring wasn't coming easily. The action got so out of hand, both managers were penalized because they couldn't control their teams. At one point in the 3rd period, the teams skated a jam with two girls in each penalty box. Mike Flaningam and Gina Vallederes were the big scorers in this half for the Pioneers. Gwen Miller, Richard Brown and Dave Martinez were the big scorers for the Bombers.

Second Half

Tempers begin to flare up with Gwen Miller and Patsy Delgado going at it along with Liz Barber and Gina Vallederes also going at it. Action started getting fast with the Bombers leading 33-31 going into the 7th period. The Pioneers came back to take the lead at the end of the 7th, 36 - 35. During the middle of the 8th period, Ray Robles was Big Splashed by Maverick. Icebox and P.A. announcer E.G. Miller even added a splash, much to the delight of the large crowd.

Then with 4:38 left, Dave Martinez went down on the far side of the track. An Ambulance was called. The last word I got when I was leaving the arena was he may have broken his knee. When the game resumed, Makani and Richard Brown collided on the last jam and Mike Flaningam scored the winning points.

Final Score 45-42 Pioneers win.

Most of the crowd was so concerned with Dave Martinez's condition that it was hard to get back into the game when it resumed. I hope Dave has a quick recovery and is not injured as seriously as it looked.
